Medicare Information at Retirement
If you are planning for retirement with Medicare, you have several choices to make regarding your healthcare coverage. Here are some options you may consider:
- Original Medicare: This is a fee-for-service program that includes Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). It is provided by the federal government and allows you to go to any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare.
- Medicare Advantage: Also known as Medicare Part C, these plans are offered by private insurance companies that are approved by Medicare. They typically include all the benefits of Parts A and B, as well as additional benefits such as prescription drug coverage, dental and vision care, and wellness programs. However, they often have networks of providers, and you may have to pay more if you go out of network.
- Medicare Prescription Drug Plans: Also known as Part D, these plans are offered by private insurance companies and provide coverage for prescription drugs. You can enroll in a standalone Part D plan or choose a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage.
- Medigap: Also known as Medicare Supplement Insurance, these plans are offered by private insurance companies and can help pay for some of the costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
